Amitayus Buddha

Tibet – China, 19th century 

Gilt copper, cast using the lost wax method. Amitayus Buddha is associated with longevity; in the palms of his hands he holds a vessel with the nectar of immortality. The engraved inscription in the lower section of the throne dates the object to the reign of the Qianlong Emperor (1735–1796), who was a follower of Tibetan Buddhism. The draping in Amitayus’s robe corresponds to mid-18th century style.
